Capsule Hotel, Luxury Prison, PI, etc.

Recently, all PI stu­dents who applied for LOOPS'07 [1] received an email from the con­fer­ence com­mit­tee, which refused to pro­vide us free acco­mo­da­tion for the rea­son that they thought PI was sup­posed to fund us. In fact, in early this year we got a sim­i­lar email from orga­niz­ers of a Pol­ish Sum­mer School [2] on Quan­tum Grav­ity. It is inter­est­ing that all these orga­niz­ing com­mit­tees had such an impres­sion that PI is so rich and is sup­posed to finan­cially sup­port its stu­dents for any aca­d­e­mic event. Nah, such an impres­sion is cer­tainly not true. For­tu­nately, our super­vi­sors will be able to solve the prob­lem for us. Even though, some stu­dents are try­ing to save money; one of them found a place in More­lia, which costs only $10/night, to stay in Mex­ico. I don't know what a $10/night hotel looks like. But I know Japan has many so-called Cap­sule Hotels.

The above two pic­tures show the inside of a Cap­sule Hotel, in which one can sleep (of course) and watch TV. The left pic­ture below is the out­side of a Cap­sulte Hotel, which reminds me of a very nice Sci-Fi/Horror movie: Cube [3], whose poster is the right pic­ture below. If you've never seen this movie before, I strongly rec­om­mend it to you.

The Cap­sule Hotel and the Cube also look like the North side of Perime­ter Insti­tute (see below). 

Cap­sule Hotels may be the most eco­nom­i­cal acco­mo­da­tion in the world. If I then talk about the most lux­ury hotels in the world, it wouldn't be inter­est­ing because one should have seen many of them. There­fore, I would like to present you the most lux­ury prison in the world, i.e. the Jus­tice Cen­ter Leoben in State Steier­mark, Aus­tria, as shown below. 

Give me a break! Could any­one believe this is a prison? Frankly speak­ing, Jus­tice Cen­ter Leoben is not a prison only but a com­plex of courts, offices of Judgers, and prison. Nev­er­the­less, the above build­ing, or even a part of it still appears too lux­ury to be a prison. Here are more pictures.

The above prison cell looks, if not bet­ter than, at least as good as the dorms of many uni­ver­si­ties. I can imag­ine the "cheer­ful mood" of the pris­on­ers stay­ing there. I think some of the pris­on­ers prob­a­bly are liv­ing in a con­di­tion much bet­ter than they have out­side the prison. Would such a lux­ury prison turn out to be encour­ag­ing to com­mit­ting a crime? I don't know, but I am afraid the answer is yes.

Any­way, let's be fun. Don't you think the Jus­tice Cen­ter Leoben is more beau­ti­ful and qui­eter than PI? Now the real ques­tion is wether a group of the­o­ret­i­cal physi­cists are able to do bet­ter research in a nice prison like Jus­tice Cen­ter Leoben than at an insti­tute like PI?
